Birth and Postpartum Doula
Welcome to Glowing Origins! I'm Katelynn, a wife, a mom to two little ones, and a birth and postpartum doula. I live in Utah County and love seeing the mountains from my windows! My road to doula work began when I was pregnant with my first baby. I was scared and didn't know what to expect. I didn't do much research and let my doctor take control of my pregnancy and birth. My mental health was already in poor condition during pregnancy, and it took a nose dive after my baby was born. I thought I would never have another child. When I felt well enough to get pregnant again, I wanted a different experience.
I chose my provider carefully, and I prepared myself (and my husband) for an unmedicated birth. During this postpartum experience, I felt empowered to make decisions from a place of love and intuition, rather than fear and guilt. While it wasn't easy (is postpartum ever?), it was beautiful and fulfilling. My hope as a doula is that I can empower the women I work with to allow themselves access to everything they need during pregnancy and postpartum: rest, nourishment, feeding support, and emotional support to name a few. I hope that when you look back on your experience, you can say that it was a bright beginning to your motherhood journey.
My Philosophy
As your birth doula, my priority is to provide nonjudgmental support in the birth that you want. While this may look different for everyone, some ways I can support you are through providing physical comfort measures, creating an environment where your oxytocin can flow, empowering you to make decisions, and acting as a witness to your power as a birthing woman. While I cannot protect you from certain feelings or events that may happen during labor and delivery, I will be at your side through it. As Melissa Chappell, my doula trainer, said, "I cannot guarantee how your birth will go, but I can promise that you will be loved through the experience."
My first priority as your postpartum doula is your physical and emotional well-being, my second is the well-being of your newborn, and my third is taking care of anything that gets in the way of the first two. If what you need is sleep in order to take care of yourself, I will take care of the baby while you rest. If what you need is a clean kitchen in order to not feel so overwhelmed, I will take care of it. If all you need is a listening ear, I will sit and listen to you and validate your feelings. Postpartum comes with many ups and downs; I will support you through it and adjust to your needs day by day.
